On Friday, October 18th, 2019, CAS hosted a network building summit at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with school leaders, artists, and academics from across the United States and Canada. The objectives of the meeting were to norm, form, and decide on a clear focus for our work together to form a network of schools that place the arts at the center of learning and to assess the impact of that work from a public health perspective. Among the thought partners present were three-time Grammy award winner Esperanza Spalding and Dean Michelle Williams of the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.

In August, we welcomed 20 emerging school and nonprofit leaders to the August Intensive, an eight-day launch pad for the work they will undertake as part of the 2019-2020 Cohort of the Perrone-Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership (PSi). The new Cohort included a member from beyond the Eastern Massachusetts area—way beyond, in fact—Johannesburg, South Africa. Shannin Antonopoulo, Project Manager at Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg, attended as PSi’s International Fellow.

The first school, High School for Recording Arts, opened in St. Paul, MN in 1998. David “TC” Ellis, having already experienced a storied career as one of Minnesota’s first rap artists, decided to use his own experiences as a musician and student to open a new school for young people.

Is giving students and teachers a voice in decisions innovative? I would argue that it is. We live in a society where decisions are typically made by those in power without the consideration of those affected by the decisions. We see this in politics, in business, in education, and even portrayed in movies. Teachers typically have to work with a curriculum developed by someone else without the ability to alter it to fit their teaching style.

On February 26, 2019, Esperanza Spalding visited our partner school, Conservatory Lab Charter School. This was a magical moment for students as well as the adults who teach them music on a daily basis. Esperanza met the second grade orchestra named for her. She talked about the trust and freedom she saw in their eyes—something in short supply in most schools today, particularly under-resourced urban schools.

Deeper Learning: The Conference and the Connections that Followed

At the end of March, I attended the Deeper Learning conference, which took place at High Tech High’s campus in San Diego. This was my first time at Deeper Learning, and I got a good sense of why this is an important gathering for progressive educators throughout the United States. In some ways, Deeper Learning is a new iteration of the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) and that made me very happy. The Common Principles were the foundation of CES and much of Deeper Learning has its roots there.
